The latest UOKiK report is a cold shower for both consumers and investors.
Cadmium and lead. Records no one wanted to break
Inspectors examined 332 batches of products, including jewelry, clothing, leather goods, and household textiles.
It turns out that every fourteenth product (7% of all) should not even be sold.

The shocking test results are a warning signal; if a company cannot control its supply chain and allows heavy‑metal‑laden goods to circulate, its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) is in ruins.
In today’s world, this is a straight path to losing the trust of investment funds, which are often the backbone of such companies.
The most severe violations were recorded in the jewelry sector. Here the UOKiK laboratory found concentrations that sound like a calculation error, but unfortunately they are a brutal reality.
In one batch, the permissible cadmium limit was exceeded by up to 400 times. Cadmium is a heavy metal with strong carcinogenic effects, accumulating in the body and damaging bones and kidneys. A dangerous product turned out to be a butterfly‑shaped hair clip distributed by PH WTM Tomasz Żukowski.
Lead fared no better, with a record exceedance of up to 333 times. This hazardous product is a gold‑plated heart‑shaped necklace made of brass on a black cord, distributed by YES Biżuteria S.A.
Lead negatively affects both the nervous system and reproduction. It should be noted that the above cases are not minor production errors that occur quite often in trade, but a signal of systemic quality control failure among suppliers.

Phthalates in tablecloths and chromium on leather – silent chemistry attacks
The problem does not end with cadmium and lead in jewelry. The next antagonists in the report are phthalates, found in ceramic tablecloths. These substances, used as plasticizers, can disrupt hormonal balance.
Therefore strict adherence to production standards is crucial. The highest concentration was up to 57 times higher than allowed and concerned Ceraty MISTRAL 90x140 cm, from distributor FOLMAX B.K. Tryczak Sp.j.
Meanwhile, leather goods enthusiasts should beware of chromium (VI). While chromium (III) is a desirable micronutrient, its hexavalent form is a dangerous allergen and strong carcinogen.
It often forms as an unwanted by‑product of cheap, sloppy leather tanning. In controlled belts and wallets, limits were exceeded more than twice.
This is a clear signal that cheap production in regions with low ecological standards carries huge risk, not only for the health and lives of customers, but also for the company's own reputation, which sells such products.

Formaldehyde under control
The only positive highlight of the inspection was formaldehyde. Although this substance is widely used in the textile industry to prevent wrinkling, no exceedances of the 75 mg/kg limit were found in the examined coats, jeans, or bedding.
This shows that appropriate standards can be maintained if the technological process is properly controlled.
