In Czech, a bicycle is a wheel. In this case, it’s not about a “wheel from a bicycle” as in the cult film “Sami Swoi,” but about whole bicycles that became the target of the Czech couple’s loot. According to Kraków investigators, the suspects, who allegedly committed several robberies in the “Royal City,” were caught on June 26 while committing the crime.
They stole bicycles and took them to the Czech Republic
This was not a one‑off offence by the Czechs. In recent weeks, as the Kraków police report, several officers received reports that bicycles were disappearing in the student town area.
“The case was taken up by criminal investigators who determined who could be behind this criminal activity. On June 26 this year, officers went to the area they had identified as the next theft location,” the Kraków police say.
At the scene a pair of Czechs appeared, riding the stolen bicycles.
“The 32‑year‑old Czech citizen and his 39‑year‑old partner were identified, then arrested and taken to the police station. Investigators determined that the foreign couple could have stolen bicycles in Kraków from June 15 to 26 and then transported even a dozen or more to their country,” the investigators report.
They face up to five years in prison
Instead of heading to the Czech Republic, the thieves may take a completely different “trip.” The Czechs face up to five years of imprisonment. So far, investigators, based on the evidence collected, have charged the woman with five counts of theft of single items, and the man with eleven.
The case may not end here, as police still await reports from Kraków residents whose bicycles were recently stolen.
“Police appeal to those whose bicycles have been stolen recently to report to the IV Police Department in Kraków” – we read in the statement.
