According to CEPiK statistics developed by the Samar Institute, in 2025 Poland had 4,751 vehicles stolen. Factory-installed security is often insufficient. See how to protect your car from being stolen.
How exactly does the ‘suitcase’ theft method work?
Thieves using the ‘suitcase’ method employ modern keyless systems. Typically, two people with specialized electronic equipment are required for the theft:
● One criminal follows you in the parking lot, and his equipment captures the signal from your original key and transmits it to the accomplice.
● The second thief stands by your car with a receiver resembling a small suitcase. The device simulates the presence of the original key in front of the vehicle’s computer.
The car receives the signal, unlocks the doors, and the thief simply gets in and drives away.
Can the signal from a keyless key be blocked?
The simplest way to protect against ‘suitcase’ theft is to physically block the radio waves. If the signal is blocked, the criminal cannot intercept it. You can do this in two ways:
● Store all keys (including spares) in a special box or case that dampens the signal (a Faraday cage).
● Buy a so‑called Keyless Protector – an intelligent battery cover inside the remote that cuts power to the key when it lies idle.
What additional security can be installed in the car?
Special attention should be given to hybrid security systems:
● Digital immobilizer – the system connects directly to the vehicle’s computer and prevents the engine from starting until you enter a hidden PIN code.
● Mechanical locks – traditional locks on the gearbox or steering column. Criminals avoid cars whose theft requires force and time.
● GPS locator – can help the police locate the car. However, it should be installed in places that are hard to find.
What to do if the car falls victim to thieves?
The factory alarm alone is often insufficient as an effective anti‑theft measure. Thieves can find a way to intercept almost any car. Therefore it is worth having Auto‑Casco (AC). It can be an insurance against car theft, provided you have the appropriate coverage.
AC usually covers compensation if the key is stolen during a home break‑in or robbery. However, if you lose the remote or fail to secure it properly, the insurer may reduce or refuse the payout.
