The most important factor influencing global markets was the sharp rise in oil prices, triggered by the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. Brent crude prices surpassed $100 per barrel yesterday, further heightening concerns about a resurgence of inflationary pressure. On Thursday we also learned of the European Central Bank's decision to keep interest rates unchanged. The deposit rate was held at 2.25%, and the refinancing rate at 2.40%.
Supply pressure was also visible at the largest foreign trading floors. The German DAX fell 1.77% yesterday, the French CAC40 lost 1.64%, and the British FTSE250 recorded a 1.25% loss. On Wall Street, a strong sell-off of technology stocks dominated after the release of quarterly results.
Alphabet fell 6.89% yesterday as investors were alarmed by the increase in planned capital expenditures, and Tesla dropped over 14% after weaker profit results and negative free cash flow. After the session closed, Intel announced clearly better-than-expected results both in revenue and profit.
Oil continues to rise
Friday trading will begin in a setting of noticeably weaker global sentiment. European investors will be mainly influenced by the strong discount of U.S. tech stocks and persistently high oil prices.
