Stock surged 800% in one day! Market goes wild over company’s AI pivot

When woolly slippers are selling like hotcakes, and your company is scrubbing the stock market floor, you have two options – file for bankruptcy or… turn to AI. Allbirds chose the latter, swapping eco-friendly cotton for silicon chips. The market reacted with an enthusiastic rally, and the stock price surged over 800% in a single day. A brilliant move, or a desperate attempt to escape the guillotine of insolvency?

From woolly slippers to silicon cores powering AI

The April move by Allbirds will go down in economics textbooks as the most audacious yet effective pit stop of the decade. The brand, once synonymous with comfort and eco-friendly footwear, officially ended its apparel era. The drastic decision was driven by financial reality. Over the past three years, Allbirds’ shoe sales fell by as much as 50%, forcing the board to close nearly all U.S. brick‑and‑mortar stores, except a handful of outlets.

Instead of filing for bankruptcy, the board made decisions that stunned Wall Street analysts. The entire legacy, the Allbirds brand, and intellectual property rights were sold to American Exchange Group. The transaction amount paid off part of the debt, but what was done with the remaining assets sparked investors’ imagination.

The company announced a rebrand to NewBird AI, completely severing ties with its footwear roots. Rather than designing uppers and soles, the firm now focuses on delivering computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence.

A bold, aggressive, risky move smelling of pure opportunism – exactly what Wall Street loves. The AI bubble is still far from bursting, and all new project rumors generate lively interest.

The hunger for computing power, i.e. GPU-as-a-Service

The business acrobatics of Allbirds were driven by the global shortage of computing power. Building massive data centers cannot keep up with the appetite of language models and autonomous systems. NewBird AI intends to fill this market gap as a GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS) provider. The firm has already secured a deal with an anonymous institutional investor for $50 million. These funds will be fully allocated to purchase state‑of‑the‑art GPU units. That hardware will become the core of their new cloud and business strategy.

For investors, tech enthusiasts, and players, this is a clear signal that the graphics card market remains in a phase of extreme demand. NewBird AI does not want to build its own AI models – they want to own the trailer with blades during the gold rush.

Offering computing power to smaller firms and startups that cannot queue for giants like Microsoft, Google or AWS is a simple and brilliant strategy in terms of timing. Nonetheless, the company is betting everything on one card, hoping their new infrastructure will fill gaps in the lagging global data center development.

As of mid‑April, the company’s shares (mainly associated with outlet sales) were around $3. After announcing the new strategy and rebrand to NewBird AI, the price shot up to $24 at the day’s peak, translating into an astonishing 800% rise, though the price later stabilized around $18, still representing a near 600% increase.

Today the trail of that phenomenal one‑day rally has vanished, as the stock now hovers around $5.34. This does not change the fact that the AI bubble allowed the company to survive, and perhaps NewBird AI will now slowly build a position in the GPUaaS market.
