Trump met with Rutte. "I understand his point of view"

Donald Trump expressed frustration with NATO after some member states opposed providing support for the United States and Israel's attack on Iran.

The President of the United States criticized the North Atlantic Alliance for insufficient engagement in the Middle East, while also raising the issue of Greenland.

"NATO was not there, when we needed it, and it will not be there if we need it again. Remember Greenland, that great, poorly managed piece of ice!" he said in a post on Truth Social.

The Republican had previously met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who stated that the American leader "is clearly disappointed with many NATO allies".

"I understand his point of view", Rutte said on CNN "The Lead with Jake Tapper" after a more than two‑hour meeting at the White House.

"It was a very honest, very open conversation, but also a conversation between two good friends," he added.

According to foreign media, several NATO countries opposed support for the U.S. military campaign against Iran, including refusing U.S. military aircraft use of their airspace or sending naval forces to unblock the Strait of Hormuz.

Rutte said that in his view "some" NATO countries did not fulfill their obligations in the Iran operation, but "the vast majority of Europeans" were helpful.

The President of the United States, during a Monday press conference at the White House, stated that Washington still wishes to take over this territory.

"We want Greenland. They don't want to give it back to us. And I said: "bye, bye"", he said.

Last week Trump called NATO a "paper tiger" and said he was "definitely" considering withdrawing the United States from the alliance.

The debate over taking Greenland at the beginning of the year revived discussion in Europe, which opposed Washington's imperial plans.

Despite a two‑week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, the conflict’s effects still burden Washington’s relations with its allies, increasing the risk of further deterioration of bilateral relations.
