Over the weekend, the media buzzed with reports that Poland was supposed to give Ukraine some missiles for the Patriot Battery, the most advanced air defense system our country possesses.
"It turns out that in March, secretly before the Sejm, the government gave Ukraine expensive and hard-to-buy intercept missiles for the Patriot systems. They were purchased by Poland from the USA to build a multi-layered air defense system that you have heard about in the media for years, and which is still unfinished. These are the only missiles that Poland had/has that can counter Russian Iskander missiles threatening Poland and stationed in the Kraków area" – wrote Krzysztof Bosak, one of the leaders of the Confederation, on X.
The MON head declassifies documents
Interestingly, the Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz did not deny that Poland handed Ukraine missiles for the Patriot system. In return, he said that information about the aid given to Ukraine will be declassified.
"After consulting with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, while maintaining responsibility to the public, in accordance with the law, I ordered the declassification of all donations to Ukraine from 2022‑2026" – wrote Deputy Prime Minister and MON head Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz on X.
The leader of the Polish People's Party noted that the process of handing over equipment to Ukrainians began with his predecessors from the government formed by Law and Justice, led by former MON head Mariusz Błaszczak. As the Deputy Prime Minister added, each time the equipment was handed over, the President of Poland was informed – now Karol Nawrocki, previously Andrzej Duda. The head of the Presidential Office for International Policy, Marcin Przydacz, did not confirm these words; he was surprised by the reports during the Sunday program “Śniadanie Rymanowskiego” on Polsat News.
"Unfortunately, it is very likely that the government in spring handed Ukraine rockets for the Patriot systems" – admitted Marcin Przydacz on television. And this is not the only controversy related to the government’s decision. Another is that Poland was supposed to give up its place in the queue for new Patriot missiles from the American factory to Ukraine, which was behind our country in that queue. That would mean the missiles would reach Poland later than earlier agreements indicated.
Finding the culprits
After the milk spilled – i.e., the information about the equipment transfer reached the public – people started looking for culprits.
"I also ordered the SKW to investigate who intentionally sought to reveal state secrets. We operate under war conditions on our border; every action against the Polish state’s interests jeopardizes the safety of Poles – Mr. Mariusz Błaszczak has already done this once. We will hold everyone accountable, regardless of immunity" – wrote Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz on social media.
If the information about such valuable equipment as Patriot missiles for Ukraine was a scandalous decision, the head of MON Mariusz Błaszczak commented on social media.
"If the reports that Poland handed Ukraine PAC‑3 missiles for the Patriot systems are confirmed, we will be dealing with a decision requiring immediate and detailed explanations. These missiles are a key element of Poland’s sky defense against ballistic missiles and other advanced threats. Transferring such fundamental armaments in a situation where the government itself warns of a growing threat from Russia would be a scandalous decision" – wrote Mariusz Błaszczak on X.
