Over the past two months, the US administration has authorized shots counted in the tens, if not hundreds of thousands. Until now, however, all of them took place far from the people concerned, literally on the other side of the globe. This weekend, however, the most important figures of American politics were reminded that the noise produced by weapons can be unsettling.
First, let’s take a look at the Washington events. On Saturday, the annual formal dinner of the White House Correspondents' Association was organized. The entire cream of American politics, led by the president and vice president, was present. Just a few minutes after the event, which was supposed to be a turning point for Trump, shots were fired in the room.
The key figures were immediately evacuated by special services, and the suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter. No one was harmed. That’s all, if you want a telegraphic summary, but let’s expand on the thread because it’s quite nuanced.
First of all – what happened? The White House Correspondents' Association Dinner is an annual banquet that invites distinguished guests, including politicians, philanthropists, and a host of other influential people. The event is the main source of income for the association, and the money goes, among other things, to journalism scholarships and educational programs dedicated to freedom of speech. This year, the banquet held in one of the Hilton hotel banquet rooms in Washington, hosted 2,600 distinguished figures. The dinner has a century-long tradition and usually featured American presidents. Usually, because Donald Trump, even though he has been in his second term for two years, had not yet attended. All due to his complicated relationship with the association and the press.
The US president long believed the organization was hostile to him, so he declined invitations during his first term. This year was supposed to be symbolic, as the top American administration’s visit was meant to be a gesture of reconciliation with the press. Even more so, because recently there were grotesque disputes about its activities in the White House.
Recall that Associated Press journalists were excluded from the administration’s press conferences a while ago because they refused to call the Gulf of Mexico the American Gulf, as Donald Trump wanted. In early April, a federal judge ordered the administration to restore AP journalists the same access as the rest of the press. That decision was later revoked. Simultaneously, a similar case was underway between the Pentagon and the New York Times newsroom, whose access to administration meetings was also limited. In this case, the justice system also intervened to regrant accreditation to journalists. Additionally, there are claims worth millions of dollars concerning defamation, which Trump’s lawyers are fighting in court against other media.
As you can see, the relationship is tense, and like in geopolitics, some sought de-escalation while others did the opposite. It’s worth noting that before the dinner, about 500 retired journalists signed a petition calling for a demonstration against the claim that “Donald Trump tramples press freedom.” Some association members boycotted the dinner with the president, organizing a competing event at the same time.

The most controversial speech in history that never happened
Donald Trump, of course, accepted the invitation on his terms. As he later said, he had prepared the most controversial speech in history. It’s worth noting that the customary practice during the dinner is humorous speeches full of jabs and sarcasm. Well, Trump might have been somewhat disappointed by the event, partly because he was once mocked there.
Years before he became president, in 2011, Barack Obama attended the same gala as president, and Trump was one of the invited guests. He was already launching his political career, stirring controversy over Obama’s birth certificate. At that time, a major political issue was whether a black president could even be elected, as only someone born in the United States could become president. Trump was one of the main skeptics.
Obama used his tactical eloquence to take advantage of the gala to criticize Trump. He declared from the podium that if the official birth certificate didn’t dispel doubts, he would go a step further and publish a video of his birth. The video turned out to be a cult scene from The King.

But the saga didn’t end there. Shortly after, Obama admitted he was very glad the birth certificate issue was resolved, so Donald could focus on truly important matters, such as: “Was the Moon landing filmed in a studio” or “Where are Biggie and Tupac.” Just a reminder, those others were murdered rappers in the ’90s. To this day, conspiracy theories circulate that they were not shot and lived to old age in hiding.
American political commentators say Trump took this humiliation very personally and it was one of his main motivations in later presidential campaigns against Democrats. That’s why, when he had the chance to deliver such a speech, he was determined to not let the language be as he promised and those close to him. After the whole commotion, at a press conference, instead of worrying that someone might again threaten his life, he was sad that he couldn’t speak. As he said, he was truly determined to give a blow and, as he stated, it would be the most inappropriate speech he had ever made. And after all, he already has several strong candidacies on record.

They were supposed to shoot and they did
From a historical perspective, the words of the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, sound like a quote from a black comedy.
At the start of the gala, in a conversation with a Fox News reporter, she said the speech would be funny, entertaining, and that “shots would fall.” She was not aware at the time how right she was about that last point.

Trump didn’t even get to give his speech. At the start, guests and the president themselves were entertained by the mentalist Oz Pearlman. When he performed a trick with the First Lady, shots fell in the building. The service’s reaction was immediate. As you can see in the attached video, Secret Service agents rushed out of the back and first seized JD Vance and then, with slightly more difficulty, Donald Trump, before they fully understood what had happened.
The president later explained that at first he thought a waiter’s tray had fallen, not that someone was shooting a firearm. Despite the fact that two years ago at a Pennsylvania rally he was almost murdered, he was not overly concerned, and later he plainly said he wanted to finish the dinner as planned, but security protocol prevented it. He informed that he wants the event to happen as it should and will be reorganized within the next 30 days.

The reaction probably even surpassed Dana White, a good friend of Trump and UFC chief, the world’s largest MMA federation. After the commotion, clearly rattled, he said he didn’t lie down as everyone advised. Using words I won’t quote, he said he really liked it.
Interestingly, Trump also used the whole situation to sell again how good the White House banquet hall is, which he ordered built. He said the hotel was not sufficiently safe, and such a hall will allow similar events to be organized without fear of repetition.

Who carried out the assassination attempt on Trump’s life?
So, what really happened? It’s a good moment to reflect on what occurred. The situation ended in great fear. Ultimately, the attacker only fired a few shots, of which only one hit a functionary. Additionally, he had a bulletproof vest, which prevented serious harm. The suspect had a rifle, pistol, and several knives. We also know his identity. It is Cole Thomas Allen, a 31‑year‑old Californian who could boast engineer and master degrees. He worked as a tutor and video game developer. The authorities already tried to uncover his ties to the other side of the political dispute, and they found one. Allen in 2024 allegedly donated $25 to Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. He was not a registered political activist, nor did he have a criminal record. His motives remain unknown. According to CBS News, after his arrest he told officers he wanted to “cause as much harm to the administration as possible.” Current findings suggest he acted as a so‑called “lone wolf.” Donald Trump himself later described him as a very sick person. Allen will stand before the court this Monday.
In the end, it ended only with a moment of terror and negligible consequences for everyone except the arrested. Nevertheless, the frequency of similar armed attacks on political figures in America is raising serious concerns. Recall that last year at a university speech, Charlie Kirk, a young conservative voice, was shot. His wife Erika was at the Association dinner that weekend, and as you can see in the attached video, unlike Trump and White, she endured the whole event traumatically, which is unsurprising.
