Stock Market: WIG20 and mWIG40 in Loss

The WIG20 and mWIG40 fell more sharply against the sWIG80, showing the negative impact of foreign capital, although European markets were dominated by gains.

The DAX rose 0.6% following oil falling more than 3%, and the UK index FTSE (+0.7%) also benefited from the resignation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The session in Warsaw mirrored that on Wall Street.

After a higher opening, the indices fell below the opening level during the day and continued to consolidate in a narrow range for most of the time. The indices were negatively affected by the so‑called Big Techs (especially the recent debutant SpaceX, which was over‑priced by more than 16%), although the semiconductor index ended the day with a near 0.7% gain.

Despite oil price declines, energy stocks and U.S. Treasury yields rose slightly. We also saw further strengthening of the USD, which did not hinder the rebound of precious and industrial metals valuations.

            Macro: Retail Sales Growth

Yesterday we received monthly data on economic activity. According to the Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS), real retail sales increased by 3% year‑on‑year. Demand rose most strongly (about +10% year‑on‑year) at petrol stations, pharmacies, cosmetics stores, and a wide range of other classified categories.

Construction and assembly production rose 3.9% year‑on‑year, confirming the spring revival symptoms. The best performance in May was in specialized construction (+10.8% year‑on‑year). Employment in the enterprise sector fell 0.9% year‑on‑year in May, while average wages increased 5.8% year‑on‑year.

On Tuesday, market attention will focus on preliminary PMI estimates for industry and services for major world economies in June. May estimates already indicated a slight deterioration in industrial activity (with the fading of one‑off factors such as accumulated order growth) and a modest improvement in the services sector. Locally, the National Bank of Poland will publish data on money supply in Poland.
