In line with the saying “Poles can do anything,” the idea that one can earn money without working can be supported by the thesis that at least some of our compatriots chose Norway as a place to live precisely because of its high level of social assistance. According to data presented by the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration, Poles are one of the immigrant groups that receive the most money from social benefits. Polish citizens draw more money from the Norwegian state budget than citizens of African, Asian, and both American countries combined.
Poles readily take advantage of Norway’s “social” system
Spending from the Norwegian budget on Poles living in the country is significant. According to data from the Norwegian agency, 111 million of the 360 million kroner earmarked for family support go to our compatriots. This is the Barnetrygd program, which is somewhat like Poland’s 800-plus, but paid to immigrants. In total, for infant benefits and maternity support, Poles receive more than 43 million PLN when converted to our currency. And that is only part of the money that goes to Polish immigrants from the Norwegian budget.
Another benefit that Poles receive is unemployment benefits. More than half of the entire amount allocated from the Norwegian budget for this purpose goes to people from our country. That is 231 million kroner out of a pool of 420 million kroner (over 91 of 165 million PLN). Poles also frequently use sickness benefits. In 2025 alone, 799 million kroner were allocated for this purpose for citizens of our country, which is over 313 million PLN.
Swedes take even more
There are currently almost 110,000 Poles living in Norway. Although they often use the social benefits offered by the country, they are not the immigrant group that receives the most money from the Norwegian budget. Swedes do, receiving the most money among all immigrants living in Norway. However, it is important to note a significant difference between Poles and Swedes. Regarding benefits for the latter, a large portion of the money consists of pensions for Swedes who have lived in Norway for years. A large portion of Poles using Norway’s “social” benefits have lived in the country for a much shorter period.
