Huge Scandal Surrounding GTA 6! Lack of Respect for Players? Controversial Company Decision Causes Massive Stock Market Declines

Pre‑order sales for GTA 6 have launched, but players and investors feel decidedly mixed emotions. Instead of a traditional fan celebration, Rockstar Games triggered a real earthquake that struck the financial markets with a shotgun blast. The decision to distribute physical editions of Grand Theft Auto 6 without a physical disc sparked massive backlash from the community (and stores), and the publisher’s stock chart plummeted dramatically.

Over the past few years, players have grown accustomed to the increasing financial burden of modern gaming.

A empty box for 349 PLN, i.e. Rockstar’s digital trick

The announced, relatively high price for the upcoming GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S was widely discussed, but what followed added a bitter twist. The real surprise, and quickly a strong distaste, was the official announcement about the contents of the game’s box. Physical, plastic boxes that will hit store shelves will not contain a traditional Blu‑Ray disc.

Rockstar decided that physical releases will contain only one‑time activation codes, allowing a digital copy of the game to be linked to a user’s account. For millions of collectors and traditionalists for whom a physical disc is a symbol of real ownership, this was a slap in the face.

Buying plastic with a piece of paper inside became a symbol of absurd corporate practices that, instead of respecting the customer, prioritize maximizing profits at the lowest cost.

Retail revolt against the digital revolution

It turns out that this turn of events outraged not only players but also sparked an unprecedented revolt from well‑known and respected online stores. Two major video‑game retailers, the Canadian Video Games Plus and the American Loot Box Gaming, officially refused to sell the “boxed” Grand Theft Auto 6 as a digital code.

The sellers outright expressed categorical opposition to Rockstar’s controversial decision and announced that they would not support the launch of the “sixth” in such a form, as it conflicts with their internal sales policy.

The declaration from both parties is clear and straightforward: until (if ever) GTA 6 appears on real physical discs, the game will not appear on their websites. Video Games Plus issued a statement on the matter, citing its long‑standing, 40‑year history and ironclad principles that exclude deceiving customers with a de facto empty package. Company representatives wrote:

For almost 40 years VGP has been committed to supporting physical media and protecting the value of owning games in physical form. As part of this commitment and our company policy, we do not offer physical console game boxes that contain only a digital download code. If Rockstar ever releases a physical edition with a disc in a box, we will sell that version to our customers.

It is worth adding that our local stores are also rebelling, given that many have already prepared for the launch – billboards, ads, announcements of night‑time boxed releases.

Wall Street brutally scrutinizes the publisher’s greed

The fans’ outrage also translated to the market, as Take‑Two Interactive – the publisher of GTA 6 – painfully realized. Investors, seeing the escalating conflict with players and the official boycott by specialized distributors, panicked.

The fear of mass pre‑order cancellations and potential consumer boycott immediately reflected in the stock charts.

Take‑Two Interactive shares recorded a powerful, rarely seen crash for such highly anticipated releases. The company’s asset valuation fell by as much as -2.83%, pushing the share price to 235.77 USD. It turned out that the desire to save on disc manufacturing and logistics costs could cost the firm billions of dollars in lost market capitalization.

The war over physical media continues, and Rockstar must quickly rethink whether it is worth alienating its own community.
