The world at your fingertips
Research conducted by Walutomatu* among platform users shows that over 91% of them plan an overseas trip within the next 12 months. Fintech customers are very mobile and enjoy visiting other countries. Whether privately or for business, more than 5 times a year, one in four respondents travels abroad. Almost 30% of respondents travel abroad 3 to 5 times a year, and nearly 40% travel 1–2 times a year.
Travel outside EU countries is also popular among respondents. Almost 62% of respondents declared that they have taken such a trip at least once in the last 3 years. Countries such as Turkey, the United States, Egypt, the United Kingdom and Thailand are of particular interest.
Appetite for gigabytes
While roaming (regulated by EU rules) makes internet access within the EU relatively easy and cheap, it becomes a challenge outside its borders. According to Walutomatu research, almost 46% of respondents use 3 to 10 GB during a weekly overseas trip. The ability to use the internet while traveling is becoming increasingly essential for many reasons. It allows searching for information about local points and attractions, planning sightseeing routes, or staying in touch with loved ones.
So what is the main obstacle to using the internet outside EU countries? Almost 57% of respondents pointed to high prices. Other problems mentioned included lack of control over fees, the need to buy a SIM card on the spot, or low data transfer speeds. It is not surprising, as traditional roaming costs can be high and significantly cut the budget. Using public Wi‑Fi networks can raise security concerns. Searching for local SIM card sales points immediately after landing can cause frustration due to sometimes complicated prepaid registration processes or language barriers.
Technological awareness
How do we ensure internet access while traveling outside the EU? Almost 40% of respondents said they use roaming with a Polish operator, which comes with high costs. About 20% choose a local SIM card, only Wi‑Fi or eSIM. Interestingly, almost half of respondents know what an eSIM is, but have never used it or only heard of it without knowing the details.
- Our study shows that during travel, internet access and connectivity to the world are extremely important. Poles are becoming more tech‑savvy – they look for solutions that give them independence and security immediately after crossing the border. We want to comprehensively care for the financial and logistical comfort of our users, so we offer them complementary services useful during travel, such as eSIM data packages. With them, customers can provide themselves with cheap network access with a few clicks, regardless of location, without stress and without the need to physically swap a card in the phone. And that’s not all the services we plan to implement on our platform – Magdalena Jasnoch, Marketing and PR Director at Walutomatu, says.
Walutomatu’s digital eSIM card allows mobile internet use in over 200 countries and regions worldwide – without buying a physical SIM card and without worries about high roaming fees. Data packages from 1 to 50 GB are available from 5 PLN. The service can be activated online 24/7. Users can also monitor data usage in real time in the app. Walutomatu’s eSIM partner is Nomad – a global eSIM service provider.
